BOOM Blackwater hosted a traditional welcome and smoking ceremony for the naming of the newest addition to our Central Queensland crane fleet. The 300 tonne all-terrain crane is BOOM’s largest in CQ and serves to undertake the very biggest of jobs.

“BOOM acknowledges the Ghungalou Nation people, who are the traditional owners of the land which we work in. We are pleased to announce, out of respect of their elders past and present, we name our 300 tonne crane in their honour, Ghungalou.” CEO – Tony Spassopoulos

BOOM CQ management and the Ghungalou crew in the Blackwater depot worked closely with local indigenous leaders and the Ghungalou Aboriginal Corporation to come up with a fitting tribute. We were granted permission to name the new crane ‘Ghungalou’ and to decorate it with the totem of a rock wallaby, which represents the men of the tribe who traditionally travelled to hunt.

Well done to the Blackwater team and a special mention to Rodney Jarro, Jason Kuhn, Joel Little, Reg Little, Reg Ambum and Rodney Welfare who helped bring our values to life.

Naval Base recently completed the long-awaited Roelands Bridge upgrade project for Downer EDI and Arc Infrastructure. This project required the replacement of two rail bridge structures on the South West mainline railway and involved removing the old 25T steel spans and installing seven new 44T spans.

The first lift study BOOM completed for this project was in 2014, so this project has been a long time in the making. It was a critical and high profile project for both Arc and Downer due to the short window available for the works to be completed whilst the rail was shut down. The three cranes were set up simultaneously with the 450T installing two spans, the 750T three spans and the 300T two spans further down the line. With a crew of over 30 personnel working 24/7, the project was executed safely, ahead of time and within budget – a great team success!

Newmont Boddington Gold Major Shutdown – March 2019 #sydney-trains-railcorp-olympic-drive-bridge-replacement/ Wed, 20 Mar 2019 04:31:21 +0000 #?p=2923 BOOM provided 28 cranes and 154 personnel to cover 24 hour operations over one week for the March 2019 major shutdown at Newmont Boddington Gold.

Naval Base has serviced the Newmont Boddington Gold mining operations, providing cranes and associated labour since 2009. Newmont execute three major shut downs every year where they have over 1,500 personnel on site at one time.

For the March 2019 shutdown, Naval Base provided 28 cranes and 154 personnel to cover 24 hour operations over one week. The planning for the shut commenced in January which involved recruiting for the surplus crew, scoping the individual work packages and allocating the necessary cranes. In addition to the crane operators and riggers, BOOM also provide an onsite administrator, two safety advisors, six supervisors covering day and nights plus two superintendents overseeing all operations.

This is a critical time for Newmont, as they rely on their providers to deliver a safe and efficient service to ensure their plant is not shut down for any longer than absolutely necessary.

As a testament to how successfully the team executes the crane portion of these major shuts, BOOM was awarded Contractor of the shutdown due to our resilience, attitude and problem solving of some critical lifts and nine of our employees received awards for Vital Behaviours during the shutdown.

Overall a great shutdown for us, further strengthening our relationship with Newmont.

The Travel Towers business continues to provide quality work to height services across the country. Although a majority of our revenue is from the Telco sector, the opportunity for growth is now spread across a number of market segments, such as the Renewable and Energy sectors.

A major focus currently for the team is supply to the Stockyard Hill Project located 35 kilometres West of Ballarat in Victoria, which began in January 2019 and is expected to last around eight months.

This project is being managed by Zinfra and consists of 149 approved wind turbines. The Stockyard Hill wind farm has the potential to harness one of Victoria’s best wind resources, will provide substantial environmental, community and economic benefits, and has the potential to power approximately 390,000 homes annually. BOOM is assisting in the build of 66 kilometres of transmission lines to the wind farm, through providing towers to stand poles and installing transformers and string wires.

Due to the size of the project, the team has pulled together to utilise equipment and personnel, not only from the Melbourne depot, but from other depots as well. Currently the project has two 46m’s working ex-Melbourne, one 46m ex-Brisbane and one 55m ex-Wollongong.

Feedback from Zinfra has been positive, with our Operators working in well with the local crews. This has led to recently winning another job with Zinfra in the South East of South Australia.

BOOM won the contract to undertake the lifting, mechanical and electrical installation of 48 wind turbines for a new wind farm in Cattle Hill, Tasmania. The wind farm is located on the eastern shore of Lake Echo on the southern side of the Central Plateau of Tasmania. The wind farm’s 48 turbines produce up to 150 MW of clean renewable electricity, with over 528 loads of oversized turbine components to be transported from Bell Bay to the Cattle Hill project site.

BOOM has been engaged to erect the turbines for Goldwind Capital Australia, under an estimated 12-month contract.  Eight Cranes from 25T to 750T were delivered to Tasmania, in short equating to circa 4,000 freight tonnes. Pictured below is one of BOOMs cranes being driven off the ship before it headed to the Cattle Hill project.

The mobilisation of equipment provides BOOM with the opportunity to obtain further work in the wind farm sector and explore what Tasmania has to offer.
